FrankenTourismus inspires outdoor enthusiasts on komoot

Today, we’d like to spotlight the successful partnership between FrankenTourismus and komoot. Our collaboration started six years ago and we’ve since achieved remarkable milestones together.

The Franconian region’s tourism organisation focused on a holistic 360-degree communication strategy, including the use of both print and digital maps based on komoot’s content. Their efforts had impressive results, attracting over 20,000 followers.

Maximizing reach

What inspired FrankenTourismus to join komoot?

In 2018, when the partnership began, FrankenTourismus was aiming for a unified presence on komoot covering the entire region and its 16 sub-regions. The objective was to feature all Franconian long-distance cycling and hiking routes as well as the topic of hiking in autumn, reaching out to the large komoot community to boost regional awareness.

Did you know? On average, komoot users like to engage in at least two sports.

What milestones have been achieved since the partnership began?

FrankenTourismus has been very proactive since the beginning and frequently implements various new initiatives with komoot:

  • 2019: The first Collections were published on komoot.
  • 2020: They expanded their Collections for the 16 regions in alignment with the Collections for the 15 Franconian cities.
  • 2021: Komoot seminars were integrated into the Franken Academy’s course offerings. True to the spirit of collaboration, this inspired us to establish our own komoot Academy!
  • 2022: The increasing recognition by Franconian city and regional tourism associations, lead them to create their own komoot profiles.

What is the current state of the partnership and what are the focus topics?

All 16 Franconian regions and 15 Franconian cities now have a presence on komoot. Emphasizing environmentally friendly tourism, they’re creating new Collections on the topic of sustainability. The overarching goal remains the same: The promotion of long-distance routes for hikers and cyclists through a comprehensive 360-degree communication strategy.

360-degree communications

What is the recipe for success in this partnership?

From the beginning, the collaboration with komoot has been a close one – with regular meetings to identify suitable content and potential opportunities. Over the years, komoot has become an indispensable element in FrankenTourismus’ communication strategies.

A 360-degree approach means that the tours created on komoot are comprehensively used, including on the organization’s website, via QR codes in print materials, or as maps handed out on-site.

In addition, komoot vouchers are given out at trade fairs, and the name “komoot” frequently features in press releases on new Tours in the region and marketing initiatives, showing our partnership and building trust in the routes on offer.

The bottom line: FrankenTourismus exemplifies how comprehensively komoot content can be integrated into communication strategies. To read more success stories, go ahead and visit our best practices.

What does the future hold?

With a strong presence on komoot, FrankenTourismus aims for another 20,000 followers and beyond. The focus remains on providing optimally curated content for the regions and Franconian cities, emphasizing sustainable travel and outdoor activities in nature.

In 2022, FrankenTourismus used komoot to reach outdoor enthusiasts in Austria, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. In 2023, the focus was exclusively on Germany. Future plans include possibly targeting international markets again. And with komoot's reach of over 38 million users, nothing stands in the way of that.
